What an unusual year 2020 has been so far. It has become engrained in our daily routines: the “new normal” of wearing a mask when we enter buildings, nodding instead of shaking hands, and many other rituals that have been replaced and implemented since the start of the Covid-19 outbreak. Keeping your elevator up and running is very important during these uncertain times. Keeping your elevator equipment in tip-top shape and properly sanitized is the best way to keep everyone who uses the elevator safe and able to go about their day as “normally” as possible.
Protect Your Elevator from Summer Heat
Elevator rooms tend to get warm when it is warmer outside. They operate best between the temperatures of 60 and 90 degrees. Anything warmer or colder than that can cause it to have some difficulty operating and possibly equipment failures. An elevator machine room that is too hot can cause hazards like frequent need for repairs, overheating of equipment, and loss of equipment reliability. This can lead you to having to call the elevator repair service more times than you would like. It causes problems for you and your tenants or customers that rely on the elevator to help make their lives easier.
To prevent your elevator room from overheating or reaching temperatures that exceed 90 degrees, you should make sure you have a dedicated cooling system for the equipment to avoid running into these problems. A portable air conditioner can also help keep things cool while the rising summer heat can alter the temperatures of the machine room and elevator. This is very important in the productivity of your elevator, so make sure you are keeping up on your elevator’s temperature.
Stay Vigilant with Sanitization
Covid-19 is still spreading around some communities and numbers of cases are rising. Covid-19 can spread faster in high traffic areas used often by the public, like elevators, where many people use it on a given day. If you own or manage a building with an elevator that is constantly being used by visitors or tenants, you’ll want to make sure you limit any possibilities of the germs spreading. It is recommended to clean the elevator buttons as often as needed by spraying Lysol Disinfectant onto a clean, lint-free rag and wiping down the buttons. Do not directly spray the buttons with the antibacterial solution—make sure it goes onto the rag first.
Also, remember to wipe down any handrails and walls in your elevator to kill any germs spread by coughing and human touch. This is a good reminder to also sweep the door sills of dust and debris that can hoard germs or even give your elevator doors some trouble. Remember to keep your hands away from your face and wash your hands thoroughly, and wipe down other surfaces that may be used daily where germs can live.
